Do you need to know if you are an addict to alcohol or drugs? -Not every alcohol and drug evaluation is the same. At Share with a Counsellor Agency, we pride ourselves on the fact that we never recommend treatment to someone who does not need it. Our Addiction counselors have relevant knowledge of the process of addiction and screening methods; in order to recommend the most appropriate level of intervention depending on the severity of the addiction. However, substance addiction continues to be a pressing and serious issue in society. We at Share with a Counsellor evaluate personal history, work history, attitude, emotional stability, and alcohol/drug use through personal interview and assessment tools. Your counselor will discuss the results of the evaluation with you, and based on the findings, recommend a course of action

The Drug Abuse Screen Test (DAST-10)- According to Skinner 1982, it was designed to provide a brief, self-report instrument for population screening, clinical case finding, and treatment evaluation research. It can be used with adults and older youth. The DAST-10 yields a quantitative index of the degree of consequences related to drug abuse. The instrument takes approximately 5 minutes to administer and may be given in either a self-report or interview format. The DAST may be used in a variety of settings to provide a quick index of drug abuse problems.

Screening for alcohol use- In 1980, a WHO expert committee stressed the need for efficient methods to identify persons with harmful and hazardous alcohol consumption before health and social consequences become pronounced. In 1982 Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was adopted as a scientific basis for screening and brief interventions in primary care settings. The AUDIT was developed as a simple method of screening for excessive drinking and to assist in a brief assessment.

The benefits of screening- According to WHO, screening for alcohol use can help to identify excessive drinking as the cause of the presenting illness; provide a framework for intervention to help risky drinkers reduce or cease alcohol consumption and thereby avoid the harmful consequences of their drinking; helps to identify alcohol dependence and some specific consequences of harmful drinking; that people who are not dependent on alcohol may stop or reduce their alcohol consumption with appropriate assistance and effort; it provides an opportunity to educate patients about low-risk consumption levels and the risks of excessive alcohol use; it may alert clinicians to the need to advise patients whose alcohol consumption might adversely affect their use of medications and other aspects of their treatment; screening also offers the opportunity for practitioners to take preventative measures that have proven effective in reducing alcohol-related risks.

Linkage and Referrals- Addiction is a treatable, chronic disorder that can be managed successfully using a combination of medications and behavioral interventions to treat a substance use disorder. Share with Counselor addiction professionals will conduct screening for clients using alcohol & drugs during the session, and recommend the most appropriate intervention including linkage and referrals to rehabilitation Centers. We will then provide you with a very comprehensive resource of the best rehabilitation facilities in Kenya for individuals and their families on the path to long-term recovery from addiction. The rehabilitations have a working relationship with us after getting evaluated by multiple metrics, including the treatment services and support offered by each facility to clients.
